Uranian is a largely historical term for gay men which has been partially revived.

History

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs first coined the term in c. 1864 for his series of booklets, Forschungen ßber das Rätsel der mannmännlichen Liebe. Urnians were said to be essentially feminine in the book, in contrast to straight men ("Dionians"). It was used widely by gay activists and adopted for an eponymous group/movement of writers who wrote pederastic poetry and studied classics. The term was superseded after the Stonewall riots in favour of gay, apparently because "uranian" was seen as irrelevant or even offensive by the new LGB movement.

Revival/Reclamation

The first person to revive the word "uranian" was Valentin Belyaev, who earlier created a uranian flag both with the goal of combatting gayphobia by creating a separate symbol and name for gay men.

Etymology

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs first coined the term in c. 1864. This is based on an account of Aphrodite Urania's birth; that she was born from Uranus' semen in such a way in which "the female has no part", therefore symbolizing male to male love.
